There are many reasons why you would want to replace your 24v Cummins injectors, and apart from increasing HP, there are valid reasons that include fuel injector symptoms for bad, faulty, dirty, clogged, or leaking injectors.

These symptoms will present as starting issues, smog, poor idle, failed emissions, overall poor engine performance. Sometimes your engine will not reach its full RPM, or you suddenly perceive an increase in fuel consumption.

Other symptoms will include rough engine performance, surging and bucking during various throttle loads, excess smoke from the tailpipe and the ever-popular engine Knock or detonation which leads to catastrophic engine failure.

Leaking Injectors will lead to an increase in fuel consumption, as well as become a serious fire hazard. These leaks will also lead to oil thinning or hydro lock that can lead to catastrophic engine failure.

External injector leaks are fire hazards and are due to a cracked body; these injectors must be replaced immediately.

Tips

Recognizing Clogged Injectors

This is a hard one, and unless you are attuned to your engine’s performance, you might overlook this issue. Clogged injectors can sometimes imitate a bad coil or a broken plug wire, and even a bad spark plug, so realizing that you have a clogged injector can be a bit of an issue.

Essentially a clogged injector has an accumulation of old fuel, carbon and residue causes fuel injectors and sometimes their filter baskets to clog up. A clogged fuel injector is when the amount of gunk inside the injector or the filter basket does not allow fuel to flow through.

Consider that once the injector or the filter or both are clogged nothing will work except removing the injector and cleaning it professionally. Or, if you prefer not to waste time and money, just buy a new set, it’s sometimes cheaper and faster depending on the injectors you buy.

Your factors should include the time it takes to remove and clean the injectors and filters, and the mechanic won’t just do one, they will do all six. If your injectors are new, then heck mister, you have been burning some crude avocado or other fruit and veggie bio-fuel and forgot to take the roughage out.

Recognizing Dirty Fuel Injectors:

One level down from clogged is dirty. You still have a chance to clean them in the engine, but you had better recognize this issue fast. Dirty injectors restrict the flow of fuel, but don’t stop it completely A dirty injector has an accumulation of hydrocarbons and additives mixed in with gunk and carbon.

You can clean the injectors with cleaners, but sometimes its always best to take them out and clean them by hand properly. Cleaning outside the engine can be inexpensive since they are not clogged. The cleaning process is much simpler and faster. This is why dirty fuel injectors are rarely replaced, unlike clogged ones.

Recognizing Faulty fuel injectors:

There really is only one way to recognize a faulty fuel injector that is brand new, the engine won’t perform properly, and you have to consider that one or more of your injectors are at fault.

Don’t get cheap on your car, it’s a delicate device, even if it’s a Dodge Ram 6.7L. If you already invested in this beast, at least give it good parts.

Bad Fuel injectors include a bad coil, a broken pintle, ball or disc, a broken Return Spring, or a bad pintle or ball seat. In the case of rust, where the pintle or ball are seized to the body, and of course where there is a leak in the injector body; you have to replace the whole unit.
