Off-road lighting is not an option it’s a must for any serious biker. The added illumination from either a spot or a flood light will provide extra assistance in rough terrain riding, as well as provide great lighting when camping or handling emergency situations.
Adding a LED light will provide you with:
Improved Safety: when you drive along poorly lit or non-lit roads and rough patches, the extra lighting will save your life as well as make riding much easier.
Emergency Lighting: This is essential when you have to either deal with a bike issue, or help others out, or even light up an accident area. It is also a great way to beam your location to rescue workers or roadside maintenance workers when stranded in a remote zone at night.
Aesthetic Appeal: What can I say, your bike will look absolutely divine or totally beastly with a pair of posts or a few floodlights.
How to choose
You have to consider two basic factors, the purpose, and the application. However, the common features must be durability, ease of installation, withstanding rain (waterproofing) and life cycle.
Off-road lights come in a variety of colors and powers, here is what you need to look for in each type.
LED: These are the most popular, and usually have a lifespan ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 hours. Try to pick the longer life lasting models; they tend to be of the better source material. LEDs are also the least power consumptive of all the models, so they will not drain your battery.
High-Intensity Discharge (HID): These have an average lifespan of 2,000 hours, are energy consumptive but highly powerful. Useful in emergencies.
Halogen: These are the most common manufacturer of lighting systems, they provide up to 1,000 hours of lighting, and they are cheaper than most other versions, which is why manufacturers like to use them.
When you decide you want another light on your bike, consider the light pattern, this is how the beam projects the light over a distance.
Floodlight: This is a wide pattern beam width is usually between 40o to 120o and is not meant to provide distance lighting.
Spotlight: This is a focused beam that is used to penetrate long distances
Combo: combos will give you the added advantage of both wide area lighting and long-distance penetration.
