The electrode core consists of a solid metal rod surrounded by a mixed bonded covering of mineral compounds and metal powders used as a flux. The core rod conducts the electric current to the arc and melts under the heat, thereby providing the filler metal for the joint.

How to Pick a 110V Welder?
The electrode type and size for Stick Welding define the arc voltage requirements that are set between 20 to 100 volts with a range of 20 to 550 amp. The current may be either AC or DC dependent on the electrode. However, the power source must be able to control the level of current within a reasonable range to respond to the complex variables of the welding process itself.
The shielding used on electrodes provides a number of characteristics, and these include arc stability and molten metal shield from gasses. The flux acts as a complete metallurgical process shield that enables the metals to bond with minimal mechanical, chemical and metallurgical decompositions.
Stick Welding is the most common and versatile form of welding and is used on many applications from simple spot welding of light metals to seam welding of heavy duty products. The stick welding equipment is usually very simple and inexpensive, as well as portable. They do not need auxiliary gas shielding or granular flux, and the welding process is less sensitive to wind and draft and can be used in limited access areas.
There are limitations, which include the operator cycles being lower than semi-automatic or fully automated processes. The welder has to be experienced, and as this is a manual operation, requires a certain amount of stability and continuous performance levels. Stick welding is not used for titanium, zirconium, tantalum, and columbium.
